The “Elderly” Project

Occasionally, well, more than occasionally, my students will try to guess my age.

Most haven’t figured out the power of deduction and reason

Just yesterday I led a discussion with the question: “What is your earliest memory?”

“I remember being born!” Raising my eyebrows and lowering my head to look at my paraprofessional, I gave her the ‘oh-here-we-go look’….

I decided to deflect that conversation and announced that when I was 3, I remembered the emergency news bulletin on TV announcing the assassination of JFK. I said, “Hmmmm, that must have been in 1963…..

No one took the bait, actually, no one really cared. It was a Monday. We were all tired.

No one took that step of figuring out that being 3 years old in 1963 would mean I was 63.

Ooof! 63……

Later, a student wanders in my room and asks to interview me….. for the ‘Elderly Project’. her charge was to find someone over the age of 50 to ask questions about their past, how they grew up, their favorite toy, their memories of historical events.

Having the privilege to walk down memory lane with a 14 year old is not a bad thing….
